How You Can Fix Common Furnace Problems

Whether gas-powered or electric, your furnace keeps your home nice and warm. Even in the coldest winter, you can enjoy being home because it is warm and comfortable. As for commercial buildings, having a furnace ensures all occupants are warm, comfortable and productive. However, as with all equipment, furnaces may face various problems over time. How can you solve these issues? Here are some solutions that work.

Dirty filters

The Furnace filters tend to become clogged with dirt and dust over time. These dirty filters are ineffective and will increase your energy consumption and affect how your furnace works. The furnace works harder than usual to push air through the blocked spaces on these filters. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently, this may be the issue. To avoid this problem, change the filters often. This duration should be shortened during winter when the filters need to be replaced more frequently. If you ever notice a change in the heat quality you are receiving from the furnace, replace its filters.

Thermostat Not Working

If the furnace is not heating the room or it feels colder than usual, check the thermostat. Someone may have accidentally switched the thermostat off or lowered its settings. It could also be that the batteries in the thermostat died. To solve this issue, replace batteries if they are dead, correct the settings or switch on the thermostat depending on what applies to you. You can also consider buying a smart thermostat which enables you to create automatic temperature settings.

A Broken Heat Exchanger

The furnace’s heat exchanger may be cracked or broken and this can pose a danger to the people in the premise by causing carbon monoxide to leak. You will know that the heat exchanger is broken if you see soot inside the furnace, smell a strong unpleasant odour or see water on the floor around the furnace. Leaked carbon monoxide will make people in the premise experience signs and symptoms like:

  1. Nausea
  2. Eye irritation
  3. Headaches
  4. Disorientation

Noisy Operation

Your furnace should operate as quietly as possible. If you ever hear any squealing or shrieking sound, it may be because the blower belt is loose or worn out. The solution to this is to tighten the belt or replace it with a new one. You can easily do this yourself or call a professional to do it for you. If the furnace produces a grinding sound, the blower motor bearings may be damaged. Call on an HVAC expert and they will help you replace the bearing and in turn, stop the sound.

Blower Motor Running Continuously

Your blower motor is responsible for supplying the heat released by the furnace to all parts of the premise. A thermostat regulates this motor to avoid overheating, which puts it off when a set temperature is reached. If the blower runs without stopping, it will overheat the entire house and get too warm. If you feel a little too warm, this may be the issue. Listen in on how the furnace is working and if it does not stop after a while, you need to resolve the issue. Start by setting the thermostat to a temperature lower than the room temperature at the time. If the fan still keeps blowing, check the limit switch and ensure it is set to auto mode.
